Teach Your Child to Read

Welcome to Claire Reads

When it comes to reading, activities must be fun, simple, and educational. Our learning activities are tailored to help pre-K through first graders learn to read while keeping them highly engaged. We have also vetted some books and reading apps for you so that you don't have to try everything to find the good stuff. Feel free to follow us on our social media pages @clairereadscollections for updates on new activities and content!

Learning to Read

Learning to read is a difficult task. Children must learn so many things to learn how to read and it can be overwhelming to learn it all at once. To simplify the process for you, I have broken the milestones down into small steps I learned from trial and error, helpful colleagues, formal training, and academic textbooks as I taught my own children to read. Some activities may not look like reading, but are fundamental skills that your child needs before they begin to sound out words.

Getting Started

I recommend you begin by assessing what step your child is at in learning to read and then select the module that best fits your child's current level. If you are just starting, I recommend going through the Pre-Reading Skills activities. These activities often go ignored, but are the most critical skills and biggest indicator of how well a child will master reading during the first few years of school. Then, you can go through the other steps, helping your child learn letters, sounds, word families, sight words, and then phonics. Word families and sight words can be done at the same time, and this is where your child will really start to get excited as they begin to read simple books all by themselves. Feel free to repeat the activities as many times as you want with your child and help them to have fun and avoid getting frustrated. Avoiding frustration is important in the early stages of learning to read. Have fun and enjoy the activities!
