Word Families

Step 5: Word Families

After your child is able to blend a few sounds together, they are ready to meet word families. Your child will quickly learn to read hundreds of words! Word families are groups of words that have a common letter pattern and end in the same sound. For example, once you child can read cat, they can easily read: bat, sat, fat, pat, rat, hat, mat, etc. Learning word families is a key skill to learning to read. Your child will pick up on these patterns quickly since they already know how to rhyme and sound out letters. This is an exciting time because your child's reading ability will take off! They will be able to read so many new words and books. To help you find books at this exact reading level, I have made a list of books to practice word families.
