Step 4: Sight Words

It is time to introduce sight words. Sight words are words that appear often in books and are not easily sounded out, because these are some of the oldest words in the language. This module will help your child learn common words so that they can quickly start reading simple books to develop confidence in their early reading abilities.

Because sight words appear so often, it is important that your child learns to recognize them quickly. If they get caught up in trying to sound them out, they will exhaust themselves. Ultimately, your child needs lots of practice with each word in isolation and within a book. To help you get started, I have suggested an order to learning sight words and easy books to accompany each word. The list I provided goes in order, building on previously learned words so you don't have to worry that your child will come across words they don't know.

This module should be taught simultaneously with word families. This is recommended because your child can only learn ~25 sight words before early phonics skills become necessary to learn more. Otherwise, your child may regress and get confused as the words will look similar. It may be necessary to teach your child the first dozen or two sight words, but you will likely see your child picking up these words on their own as they are exposed to them often in books.
