Step 3: Blending Sounds

Now that your child has mastered single letters and pre-reading skills, it is time to put two letters together. This is called blending. The activities below are fun ways to help your child practice this skill. This stage of learning is broken down into two parts. Part one does not include any letters or words. Once your child can complete the tasks without help, move onto part two to include letters. Expect to see major advances during this module. Your child will come out of this module reading words!

*Remember, if your child is stumped for more than a few seconds, help them before they get frustrated. It is important to try to avoid frustration in the early stages of learning.

Before working through this module, make sure your child has acquired all skills in modules 1 & 2. Your child should be able to do the following skills before trying this:

  • Correctly identify all letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds

  • Recognize and create rhymes

  • Identify beginning sounds of word

  • Identify ending sounds

  • Blend two sounds together
