Puppet Nonsense
This is a simple, short, and fun activity that you can do with your little one, especially if they do not enjoy sitting still. Make a puppet out of a brown lunch bag or sock, or you can use one that you already have around the house. Then, collect some items from around the house into a basket As seen in the video, tell your child that the puppet is silly and says words in silly ways, so the child will have to guess which item the puppet is trying to say. For example, if you have a plane in the basket, have the puppet say “slane” instead of “plane” and “sasket” instead of basket.

It will be a challenge for them to detect the small changes, but will sharpen their awareness of sounds and rhymes. It may help them to close their eyes to concentrate on what they will hear. If you suspect your child will struggle, play two rounds. Do the first round together as you model how to hear the nonsense word and find the correct item. Then, on the second round, use the same items and have your child try on their own.
