Race Car Reading

Every child loves playing with race cars! Do you remember when your teacher told you to "sound out" a word? This is how your child will begin to do that very same thing! When you child is sounding a word, they will say each (letter) sound in the word slowly first, then say the sounds together fast. This takes a lot of practice, so let's make it fun!

Before you attempt this activity, make sure your child has acquired all skills in modules 1 & 2 and the non-letter activities in this module. Your child should be able to do the following skills before trying this:

  • know all letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds

  • recognize and create rhymes

  • know beginning sounds of word

  • identify ending sounds

  • blend two sounds together

To perform this activity, take a toy car and set it on the green light. When you are ready, drive it very slowly along the track stopping at each letter. Say the letter sound aloud and slowly move the car to the next letter/sound until you have reached the red light. Then, back up and quickly race the car across as you read say each sound faster, as seen in the video. After you have shown your child how to do it, encourage them to try. This will take a lot of practice so be there to help your child along. Eventually, they will be racing all on their own!
