Say It, Move It

Tactile learning activities helps children concentrate and engage in learning this new skills. This activities teaches the valuable skill of separating words into sounds and syllables while providing a visual element of sound boxes. This activity will help your child sound out words and spell words later on. Kids that struggle with this literacy skills will often have difficulty with reading.

Print out the mat and picture cards below. Remind your child that words are made of sounds and today, you will practice hearing the sounds. Tell them to focus on the sounds and not what they see. Point to the set of boxes and explain that each box represents a sound. When your child hears a sound, they will move one counter (or other object) into one square for each sound they hear. Show Show your child how to do it one or two times first. (Example hat: say the word hat, sliding one counter into one box for "h", another counter for "a" and a third counter for the "t" sound. Then run your finger along the arrow underneath the boxes to blend the sounds back together "hat". Invite your child to practice another word with you and offer help. Do not allow them to struggle. Go through the pictures one by one, having your child say each word very slowly, emphasizing each letter sound. Have your child repeat the word, stretching it as you did. For each sound, have them move a counter -- such as a penny, button, toy, or cracker -- into each space.

Advanced option: As this becomes easy, try using letters instead of counters.
