This skill is very important because your child is now mentally putting sounds together that they are READING! For this activity, your child will put two sounds together (a vowel and a consonant) to make a word or part of a word. Begin by placing magnetic letters "a" and "t" on a magnetic or dry erase board. Practice stretching out the two letter sound with your child. Replace the "t" with another consonant, such as a "p." Repeat this for multiple consonants. Then, try replacing the "a" with another vowel and go through different consonants. Repeat this with a variety of two letter sounds. Here is a great pack of magnetic letters and board on Amazon.
