Reading Passages

Look I Can Read This!

It is so exciting when a child begins to read! I often hear parents complaining about the difficulty they have finding books at their child's exact level. There are not many available for learning to read first words. Many beginner books have words that require more advanced phonics skills and leave your child frustrated. As a parent, it is important to support your little one with reading material that is just at their level AND provides practice on their new skills. To help you with this, I have prepared 20 reading passages that are at the RIGHT level for you kiddo. Each of the Word Family passages focuses on a different short vowel word family and build as you move down the list. You will be surprised just how much your child can read when you get to the last page.

When reading with your child, model how to use your finger as a guide (finger-point reading). This means your child can follow words using their index finger. Remember to be patient. Beginning readers might read very slow and this is okay! Give him/her time to sound out each letter in the word rather than guessing or skipping words. Encourage them to pay attention to each letter as they sound out the word and use the picture to help comprehension. If your child struggles with a word, it is okay to jump in and help. Slowly sounding out words is fine, but struggling is never good. Do not allow your child to get frustrated. If they do, STOP right away and go back to the previous module for extra practice. When your child finishes the passage, review the comprehension questions with them so they learn that reading gives information. Lastly and most important, let them know how proud and impressed you are!

Table of Contents

Each of the Word Family passages focuses on a different short vowel word family. Look in the top right corner to see what word family each passage focuses on. Each passage comes with just text or with a picture to aid in comprehension. These are great passages for independent practice or with help. For additional practice, you can also have your child go through and mark/highlight/circle the words they found with the word family. You can also have them mark where they found the answers to their questions.
