Th, Ch, and Sh

Th, Ch, and Sh Phonics

These three letter combination -th, ch, and sh will show up often in early reader books and can make a beginner reader frustrated if they are unfamiliar. Do not let these words hold your child back. Similar to sight words, your child must memorize the letter combinations and be able to recognize them instantly. One way I like to reinforce these sounds is through song. Teaching through son is always an easy and fun way for children to learn something new. (Bonus: you can add funny hand gestures to accompany the song!)

Show your child the video of Claire singing the th song. Sing along with Claire and make the same hand motions. Scroll down to print the free lyrics sheets for each letter combination. Whenever you are in the car or at the grocery store, sing the song so your child gets plenty of exposure. Soon enough, they will have it down and you can read the letter combinations in words! Here are Claire's favorites songs for learning the /th/ /sh/ and /ch/ sounds:

NOTE: Some children will struggle to say the th sound properly. Perhaps they are missing their front teeth or have not grasped the sound just yet. Do not worry. I've got you! See the activity "th Sound Game"
