Word Sort- Beginning Consonants
Now that your child can successfully sound out three letter words, it is time to learn 4 letter words! Woohoo! Your child will encounter words with four letter sounds more and more as they learn to read. Although the concept of blending two consonant sounds together is easy to learn, the skills required- auditory memory, sounding out/stretching words, and blending consonants is a lot for your child to do at the same time. However, this skill will lead to tremendous growth in reading and spelling.

When tackling 4 letter words, I recommend introducing initial blends before ending blends. So for example I would introduce trap before tank). The extra consonant sounds are at the beginning of words. Initially, your child will need a lot of support, but with enough help and practice, your child will sound the words out fluently. This activity is short, simple, and a great tool to give your child extra practice on blending consonant sounds. Cut out each picture card and read it aloud. Then, have your child sort each picture card into the correct column. Bonus: glue the picture cards in place to display their work on the refrigerator for extra praise!
